Wunderflats

Refugee Housing Flow

Overview

In response to the Ukraine crisis, Wunderflats became the first platform in Germany to offer a dedicated housing flow for refugees. I designed a lightweight, empathetic onboarding experience to help users quickly find housing, balancing legal constraints, emotional stress, and urgency.

The Challenge

Refugees faced complex legal rules (restricted city assignments) and high uncertainty about where and how to find housing. They needed to move fast, but within strict frameworks, and often lacked clarity or confidence in the process.

Hypothesis

A simplified, three-step flow tailored to legal constraints would allow refugees to find housing more quickly and with less confusion, even under stressful and urgent circumstances.

Research & Insights

To work fast, we collaborated with legal and support teams and used support tickets and analytics for quick discoveries:

- Users were confused about where to search or what documents were needed.
- Manual processes caused delays and distrustSimplicity and clarity were paramount in a high-stress situation.

Design Approach

- Built a 3-step onboarding wizard that focused on only what was essential, residence assignment info, federal state/city.
- Added flexibility: if no assignment yet, users could still search Germany-wide and were redirected to official guidance.
- Used a minimal interface, especially optimized for mobile, for clarity and calm.

Reflection

This project reinforced how empathetic, focused design in times of crisis matters as much as efficiency. A few well-targeted UX decisions like simplicity, clarity, flexibility, can make a real human impact.
